In a thrilling match in Perth on Wednesday, Team USA secured their spot in the United Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over Greece. The star of the show was Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion, who showcased her exceptional skills by defeating Maria Sakkari in a dominant display. Gauff's performance was a stark contrast to her previous match, where she lost in three sets to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro against Spain. Despite Sakkari's valiant efforts, winning three straight games, Gauff held her serve and took the opening set. However, Greece fought back through Stefanos Tsitsipas, who earned a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win over Taylor Fritz, a top-10 player. This victory levelled the tie, but the momentum shifted again when Gauff and Christian Harrison took to the court. The match went into a tiebreak, with both teams taking a set apiece.
In the tiebreak, the US raced to a 5-0 lead, but Greece mounted a comeback to level at 6-6. A crucial moment came when Harrison's perfectly placed volley squeezed through Tsitsipas's legs, sealing a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory for the US. Gauff's post-match comments highlighted the team's free and aggressive approach, which was a key to their success.
With this win, Team USA will face Argentina in the semi-finals, while Switzerland will take on the winners of the Greece-Spain match. The United Cup, held in Perth and Sydney, serves as a warm-up for the Australian Open, the season's first Grand Slam, which begins later this month.
