A health scare is brewing: dozens of people are battling a nasty illness linked to a popular diet supplement. Federal health officials announced on Wednesday that at least 45 individuals across almost 24 states have fallen ill with salmonella poisoning. The culprit? Live it Up-brand Super Greens powder. This news is a stark reminder of the importance of food safety.
Superfoods Inc., the manufacturer of the supplement, has issued a recall for its original and wild berry flavors. The recall includes products with expiration dates ranging from August 2026 to January 2028. If you have any of these products, the advice is clear: do not consume, sell, or serve them. Instead, discard them or return them to where you bought them.
The illnesses linked to the supplement were reported between August 22 and December 30, 2025. What's concerning is that at least 12 people required hospitalization. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The affected products were distributed nationwide, meaning anyone could have been exposed. Cases have been reported in 21 states, including Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
The FDA is currently investigating the situation, and there's a possibility that more products could be contaminated. This highlights the ongoing need for vigilance in the food industry.
But here's where it gets controversial: the symptoms of salmonella poisoning typically appear within hours or days after consuming contaminated food. These symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most people recover within a week without treatment, the infection can be particularly dangerous for young children (under 5 years old), adults 65 and older, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
It's a stark reminder that even seemingly healthy products can pose risks. What are your thoughts on this recall? Do you think the company acted swiftly enough? Share your opinions in the comments below!
