Navigating the Rental Maze: The Inspiration Behind Mifta
Dubai is a city of innovation and convenience, but when Natalia Dobrynina arrived, she encountered a rental process that felt anything but straightforward. Picture this: a whirlwind of WhatsApp messages, endless calls from agents, and a barrage of conflicting information about essential requirements like Ejari.
"It took me over six months to finally find a suitable home," Dobrynina recalled, reflecting on her frustrating journey. "Even signing a one-year lease was confusing at first, and everyone seemed to have a different take on what I needed to do."
This challenging experience sparked the creation of Mifta, a groundbreaking rental platform aimed at streamlining the entire leasing process into one user-friendly app. With Mifta, users can not only search for apartments but also self-tour properties, submit offers, and digitally sign Ejari documents—all from a single interface. Furthermore, Mifta collaborates with real estate agents, property managers, and developers to enhance the leasing experience from the supply side.
Spotting the Digital Divide
Dobrynina quickly recognized a glaring gap in Dubai's digital landscape. While the city boasts super apps for food delivery, transportation, and various on-demand services, the process of finding a home remains disjointed and cumbersome. "You often find yourself dealing with a multitude of agents just to grasp what is available before even stepping foot in any property," she explained. "The exhaustion this creates isn't just for tenants; agents feel it too."
Having lived in the US, Dobrynina had witnessed firsthand how technology can create a transparent and efficient renting process. Mifta was designed to bring that same efficacy to Dubai’s real estate market, eliminating uncertainty while maintaining a personal touch.
A Journey Marked by Perseverance
For Dobrynina, launching Mifta is part of a broader personal narrative. She hails from the small town of Mozhaiskoe and has since moved through major cities like Moscow, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley before settling in Dubai to establish her own company. "The whole journey feels almost surreal, like something out of a film," she said. "It serves as a reminder that if you genuinely pursue your goals and persist, anything can be achieved."
However, her resolve was tested early on. Partnerships fell apart, plans shifted unexpectedly, and uncertainty loomed large. The key lesson, she emphasized, was to focus on maintaining momentum rather than obsessing over perfection. "Keep moving forward," Dobrynina advised. "Every obstacle sharpens your decision-making, and every setback compels you to construct something more resilient."
Supportive Ecosystem in the UAE
Mifta’s initial strides have been significantly aided by the dynamic startup ecosystem in the UAE. The company received backing from Antler, a prominent pre-seed investor, through a program facilitated by the Dubai Future Foundation. Now operating from the Dubai Founders Headquarters, Dobrynina expressed that the benefits extend beyond mere office space.
"We’ve found a community, mentorship, and a supportive environment in a country that genuinely wants us to thrive," she noted. Additionally, collaborations with the PropTech Business Group enabled Mifta to broaden its network within the real estate industry, paving the way for partnerships and early adopters.
Funding and Future Aspirations
Since its debut less than six months ago, Mifta has experienced rapid growth, drawing interest from angel investors and various regional funds. For the moment, the focus is on scaling the platform and strengthening partnerships, with plans for further fundraising when the timing is right.
Dobrynina brings a wealth of experience from her previous role as head of investor relations at a US construction-tech startup supported by Y Combinator, Saudi Aramco, and Khosla Ventures, where she played a crucial role in raising $70 million and forming partnerships throughout the Middle East. She now channels those insights into developing Mifta.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future
In the next five years, Dobrynina envisions Mifta transforming into an AI-driven, comprehensive rental platform serving both the Gulf region and Europe. Her ambition is to make long-term renting as seamless and accessible as everyday digital services.
"More importantly, we’re crafting Mifta with the vision of creating a world where people still feel a sense of belonging in a landscape increasingly influenced by AI and technology," she stated.
Insights for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
When it comes to advice for budding entrepreneurs, Dobrynina emphasizes the importance of selecting partners wisely, ensuring the partnership extends beyond just business plans and pitch presentations. "You need to genuinely enjoy collaborating with your partners," she said. "It's an all-day, every-day relationship."
Most importantly, she encourages founders to take action even before they feel fully prepared. "You don’t need to have all the answers right away," she advised. "If you’re destined to create something meaningful, the path will become clearer as you progress. Taking action brings clarity."
This mindset was instilled in her long before the concept of startups entered her life. Her father ran a small construction materials business alongside his factory job for years before making the leap to entrepreneurship full-time.
"Only recently did I grasp the level of risk he took," Dobrynina reflected. "Watching him build something from the ground up taught me that consistent effort, day after day, can truly lead to monumental achievements."
