A Leader Who Puts People First: Valerie Nugent Honored with Making Waves Award as She Embarks on Retirement After 41 Remarkable Years
For over forty years, Valerie Nugent has dedicated her life to caring for others and guiding teams in Cape Breton. Starting her journey as a registered nurse, she became part of Nova Scotia Health in 1984. Over the course of her impressive 41-year career, she developed a rich and varied path, evolving from a front-line nurse to an influential leader. Since 2010, she has held the position of director for the Cancer Care program in the Eastern Zone.
As she officially retires on December 31, Valerie took a moment to reflect on her extensive career, emphasizing the importance of the incredible individuals she has collaborated with and the patients they have supported together.
"I feel truly fortunate to have worked alongside people who embraced the same values, vision, and mission of our organization, which closely align with my own," Valerie reflects.
"The field of cancer care is profoundly centered around the patient. Every discussion we had, every conversation we engaged in, always revolved around the needs of the patient. This focus was my greatest passion, and I genuinely believe it is this dedication that has driven our success as a team."
When Valerie considers her career highlights, the progress made in cancer treatment—both in terms of available therapies and the facilities that support them—stands out prominently.
"We have witnessed remarkable advancements in radiation therapy and systemic treatments, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy. We've transitioned from basic chemotherapy to more advanced options, leading us to the current developments in immunotherapy.
"These advancements mean that we are seeing patients live longer, healthier lives, which has been nothing short of inspiring to observe here in Cape Breton."
She also draws attention to the forthcoming Cape Breton Cancer Care Centre, named the Kyle Anne MacDonald Cancer Centre, which is set to open its doors in 2027. Valerie believes this facility will revolutionize care for patients and their families by providing easier access to essential treatments and diagnostics right in their community.
"One of the most common things we hear from patients is their desire to receive care closer to home. With the opening of this new center, outfitted with cutting-edge technology, we will vastly improve care accessibility and fulfill that need," she explains. "There is a shining future ahead for cancer care in Cape Breton."
Valerie’s leadership has certainly played a significant role in this positive trajectory. Her unwavering commitment to her team and patients was recently recognized when she received the Making Waves Award for Leadership Excellence last month.
In response to this accolade, Valerie encapsulated the spirit of her leadership by attributing her success to the phenomenal individuals she has had the privilege to work alongside.
"I feel honored to receive this award, and I must acknowledge that it wouldn't have been possible without the incredible people I've collaborated with throughout my career. The support, camaraderie, and connections built over the years were instrumental in achieving meaningful results and in enabling the continuous success of these high-performing teams."
Valerie emphasizes that her team's commitment to excellence consistently circles back to prioritizing patient care.
"Patients ultimately benefit from our culture of high quality. The resilience among team members is palpable; their capability to adjust and respond as needed demonstrates their determination to succeed and to deliver exceptional outcomes for the patients we serve in our community."
As Valerie wraps up a fulfilling and impactful career, she is confident that her team is well-prepared to maintain the high standards of care while continuing to uplift one another.
"The team is young, innovative, and immersed in a culture of trust that they will carry forward. I take immense pride in that legacy."
Her advice for emerging leaders is to lead through example and recognize their most valuable resource: their team. "Never underestimate the power of an empowered, high-functioning team in driving results."
Although Valerie is transitioning into retirement, her leadership and passion for making a difference will undoubtedly continue to benefit her local community. As she looks forward to spending more quality time with family and friends, she is also excited about finding new opportunities to give back.
"I have enjoyed an extraordinary 41-year career. It has been rewarding, fulfilling, and supported by exceptional teams. I still have much to contribute, so I hope to engage in board service, volunteer work, and continue to be a positive force in the community."
